Google reviews are the single best marketing asset an independent salon can build. They are free, permanent, and directly rank you higher in local search. And yet most salons ask for reviews wrong — usually at the wrong moment, with the wrong wording, and to the wrong clients.
Here is what actually works, based on what we see across thousands of appointments run through Insalonia every month.
The 24-hour window
Ask for a review within 24 hours of the appointment or do not bother. Client satisfaction — the feeling of walking out with a fresh cut, a new set, or a perfect fill — peaks in the first day and decays fast. Ask on day one and you convert about 35% of happy clients. Ask on day three and you convert 8%. Ask on day seven and you convert almost none.
Only ask happy clients
Send a quick 1-tap 'How was it today?' first. If they tap five stars, follow up immediately with the Google review link. If they tap anything less, thank them and ask what could have been better — but keep them away from Google. This is not gaming the system; it is filtering out reviews that would not represent your work fairly, and quietly recovering the ones that would have been vented publicly.
The SMS template that outperforms
Most salons send: 'Thanks for coming today! Please leave us a review.' That converts around 4%. Try this instead — we see roughly 4× the click-through rate:
"Hi Sarah — Camila here. Loved doing your lashes today. If you have 20 seconds, would you share what you thought? It really helps me keep the salon booked. → [link]"— The template that keeps outperforming
Why it works: it is personal (uses your name, and theirs), it is honest about the ask ('it helps me'), and it sets an expectation of effort ('20 seconds'). No corporate language, no exclamation marks, no emojis. It sounds like a human.
Reply to every review, especially the bad ones
Google boosts businesses that engage. Reply to every review within 48 hours — thanking the good ones (briefly), and calmly, professionally addressing the bad ones. Never argue. A graceful reply to a one-star review often converts more future clients than the five-star reviews themselves, because it shows how you handle problems.
Automate it, then stop thinking about it
The reason most salons stall at 20 reviews is not skill — it is that asking, tracking, and following up is invisible unpaid admin work. Automate the send so it happens after every completed appointment, filter for happy clients, and check your Google profile once a week. Salons that do this consistently reach 100+ reviews within a year. The rest are still stuck at 12.
